The Very Hungry Caterpillar Sensory Story Pack (no book)

The Story Sequencing Pictures are A6 in size, laminated and backed in card. There is a sentence to describe each picture. On the back of each is a list of the sensory objects needed, actions to perform/encourage, and any dialogue.

NB: The book is not included in this pack. The story can be told (in simplified form) using the story sequencing pictures.

The Sensory Objects are chosen to emphasise the actions in this story. Most are tactile, with some auditory, visual and scent objects included. The objects are as follows (with action suggested in brackets):

Moonlight - torch 11cm long with AA battery included + A4 black card folded in half (shine onto black ‘wall’ then onto egg and leaf)

Egg - white wooden egg the size of a chicken’s egg (hold in hand then place on leaf)

Leaf - large artificial leaf 20cm x 17cm (feel it, waft it)

Sun - folding circular yellow paper fan 18cm long when folded (open it slowly as it ‘rises’ from beneath the table)

Pop - bubbles (blow then pop bubbles)

Little caterpillar - pipe cleaner approx 12cm long (crawling)

Hungry/still hungry- wooden maraca 14cm long (shake it hard once before eats anything and after every piece of food)

Food smell - apple scented freshener (“What can he smell?”)

Food - wooden fruit pieces with holes for threading (eating)

Stomach ache - groan tube 14cm long (”Ow!”)

1 nice green leaf - large green leaf 20cm x 17cm with holes in (eating)

Big fat caterpillar - Microfibre mitt 24cm x 15cm  (crawling, eating, stroking)

Cocoon - soft gold material approx 80cm x 50cm (wrapping round caterpillar/child’s hand)

Butterfly - folding circular butterfly fan 15cm long when folded, 25cm x 21cm when opened out (flying, wafting, fanning)

All the objects are in labelled zipped bags which fit into an A3 zipped bag together with the Story Sequencing pictures.

Recommended for 1:1 and small group work.
